BILLY BINGHAM Sunderland. Fast and direct, Billy was a huge favourite with Sunderland and then Luton Town and Everton fans. He played 56 times for Northern Ireland and was feared by defences for the way he would suddenly cut inside and plunder goals.
BRYAN DOUGLAS Blackburn Rovers. He was considered the 'new' Stanley Matthews when he made his breakthrough into the Rovers team, and he scored eleven goals in 36 England internationals as a right winger with superb dribbling skills.
TOM FINNEY Preston. He was equally effective on either wing, but won most of his England caps at outside left with Stanley Matthews on the right. He was two footed and played in four different forward roles for England. The Preston plumber was knighted and netted 30 goals in his 76 England games.
JOHNNY HANCOCKS Wolves. He wore schoolboy-size boots but packed a thundering shot in his right foot. Capped just three times because of the presence of Matthews and Finney, he scored 158 goals in 343 League games for Wolves.
BILLY LIDDELL Liverpool. In his peak years at Anfield he was such a formidable force that Liverpool were known as Liddellpool. He was effective in all the forward roles, but at his most devastating when cutting in from the left wing. Capped 28 times by Scotland, he netted 216 goals in 495 League games.
PETER McPARLAND Aston Villa. A darting, dangerous left winger, he scored many decisive winning goals for Villa and Northern Ireland. He was capped 34 times, and scored more than 100 League and Cup goals for Villa before moving on to Wolves. |
STANLEY MATTHEWS Blackpool and Stoke City. The most famous footballer of his generation, he set an all-time record by playing for Stoke in the First Division at the age of 50. The 'Wizard of Dribble' won 54 caps over a space of 22 years, and was the first footballer to be knighted.
BOBBY MITCHELL Newcastle. Nicknamed 'Bobby Dazzler,' he along with Bobby Cowell and Jackie Milburn were the only players to collect three FA Cup winners' medals with Newcastle in five years. He scored 95 goals for the Magpies and was rewarded with a meagre two caps by Scotland. |
JIMMY MULLEN Wolves. He zipped down the left wing for Wolves while Hancocks was dancing down the right touchlines, and the width they gave the Molineux club was one of the reasons for all their success. Capped 12 times by England, he scored more than 100 goals for Wolves.
BILL PERRY Blackpool. A South African capped by England, he was a fast and direct left winger who was a good finisher as he proved by scoring the winning goal in the famous 'Matthews FA Cup final' at Wembley in 1953. He scored two goals in his three England appearances.
